Gladys M. Johnston, age 82, of Woodruff, WI, died on Saturday, August 7, 2010, in Mondovi, Wisconsin. She was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Alma, WI, to Harvey and Frieda (Ludwigson) Mueller. Gladys grew up in Buffalo County, WI, and graduated from Mondovi High School. She attended Buffalo County Teachers College and earned a two-year teaching certificate in 1946. She also received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from UW-Whitewater. On Dec. 30, 1947, Gladys married William (Bill) Johnston. This union was blessed with five children. Gladys devoted her life to raising their five children and teaching elementary school for 25 years. She taught elementary school in Modena, Fort Atkinson, and Jefferson, Wisconsin. Gladys and Bill enjoyed traveling together as well as working regularly as volunteers at a local hospital. Gladys was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Holy Family Catholic church. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and her brother, Roger Mueller. Gladys is survived by one brother and two sisters, Merlin Mueller of Alma, WI, Delores Oesau of Mondovi, WI, MaryAnn (Louis) Wittig of Durand, WI; three sons and two daughters, Barbara (Donald) Bratcher of Minocqua, WI, Bruce (Susanne) Johnston of Menomonie, WI, Brian Johnston of Whitewater, WI, Brad Johnston of Sunrise, FL, Brenda (Harry) Manning of Fairview, TX; seven grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. |
