| Obituary - Curtis Blaine Nelson, 83, of Westby, Wis., died peacefully with family by his side on Oct. 13, 2012, after a long illness.
Curt was born Dec. 27, 1928, in New Effington, S.D., son of Bert and Sadie Nelson. He grew up in South Dakota and St. Paul, Minn. Curt married Audrey Bruland, Sept. 30, 1950, in St. Paul. They just celebrated 62 years of marriage. Together they were blessed with four children.
Curt was a barber prior to his enlistment in the Army in 1950. He retired as a master sergeant after 28 years of service. Prior to moving to Westby, Curt and Audrey lived in Poynette, Wis., where Curt had his own appliance repair business. Curt and Audrey retired to Westby in 1993, and he was instrumental in organizing the Westby-Christiana Fire Department. He served as general contractor for the new fire department building in 2010.
Curt enjoyed his family and had many interests up until the last few years. He was involved in activities at his church. Curt also enjoyed reading and keeping track of the weather. He loved to argue with you just for the fun of it. Curt was fascinated by all gadgets, especially his computer. He even had a Facebook page. Curt loved his pets and watching their antics. He was a member of the American Legion and served a term as the state sergeant-at-arms. He was a former member of the Lions Club
Curt is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey of Westby; daughter, Becky (Michael) McFadden of Poynette; son, Dennis (Sandi) Nelson of Monroe; son, Kevin (Penny) Nelson of Iron River; and daughter, Lisa Nelson (Jerry Keller) of Boscobel. He is also survived by grandchildren, Mary Nelson, Emily, Rikka, Anika, and Anders Nelson, Brittany (Jake) Grenke, Courtney and Megan McFadden, Justin Shumate; step-granddaughter, Molly (Asa) McMahan; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by one brother, Bart Nelson of St. Paul; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier officiated with burial in Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends called on Monday evening at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Friends also called at the church on Tuesday until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials are preferred.
