Sites of West Family Origins The area in Scotland where our relatives are from is in the northeast area in the district of Aberdeenshire. The locations of the significant towns and villages are found just east of Fraserburgh - which itself is the birthplace of William West in 1891. All locations are really just a matter of a few miles between each other. Fraserburgh - The birthplace of William West is easy to locate: 33 College Bounds Street. It is the biggest of all the fishing villages where our family lived and worked. The tourist office is in Saltoun Square and is very helpful. Pittulie - This whole town (which is right next to another small town called Sandhaven) is just one street of houses right on the water. Margaret Wallace Sim was born at 57 Pittulie and had moved to 60 Pittulie when she was to marry William Duthie West. His death certificate tells us that William Duthie West died while living at Havenlea at Pittulie. It is my guess that the houses originally had names instead of numbers. Rosehearty - William Duthie West and Margaret Wallace Sim were married at the Rosehearty Free Church on Pitsligo Street. On the marriage certificate, William West is noted as living on Dingwall Street. The town was well known for the fishing of herring. Parish of Pitsligo - was main church that served the small towns close by. There are two churches on the site called Peathill - the ruins of the old kirk - and the one that replaced it in 1870. William West is buried here by the wall that faces the water. In 2002 the inscription on the headstone was getting difficult to read. We have a picture that Dolly West Earhart had taken a few years earlier; the headstone was in much better shape. We have inquired about having it restored. Pennan - Probably the most beautiful of all the family sites. It sits at the base of a north- facing cliff looking out to sometimes stormy seas. There is just enough space between the bottoms of the cliffs and the sea for a single row of dwellings, many placed with gable end on the sea to reduce their exposure to the elements. A movie called Local Hero, starring Burt Lancaster, was filmed here in 1983. It is here that William Duthie West was born in 1867 and where his mother, Barbara Duthie West, died in 1915. Macduff - Ten miles west from Pennan and is the town where William West and Mary Elizabeth Noble Bothwell were married. Their first child, Mary Crawford Noble West (Aunt May) was born here as well. The site of the wedding is listed in the marriage certificate on 6 Gellymill Street. Yoker - Just outside of Glasgow and is the birthplace of William George West and his sister Dolina Gunn West. It is from here that the West family immigrated to America. William immigrated to Boston May 1, 1923 on the ship called "Tuscania." Mary and their three children immigrated to Boston October 1, 1923 on the ship called "Samaria."
